Above is a very special poster made by Par's Aunt Sally (sophmore in college)--as people may know--Joe (my brother) brought it to our attention that naming our son "Par" was like naming him "Average"--so in an effort to clear everything up--Sally gave us this great sign. Amen, Sally--you said it girl!
Today we celebrated Par's 1 Month Birthday with 13cc's of breast milk every 3 hours! He had a little trouble because he was pretty much asleep during 2 of his feedings--his final feeding at 9pm he was zonked out and he didn't drink any. We tried waking him up--but that seemed to do absolutely nothing--he was tired from such a big birthday!
In celebration, we (Rusty & I) gave him a swing--he loves it! He sat in it for about 30 minutes today--just happy as can be--very content sucking his pacy and swinging back and forth.
Dr. Kays came and spoke to us today--we had a few questions for him and our nurse was kind enough to request a meeting for us. He was very impressed with Par's eating progress and said that he can try breastfeeding any time now. At Par's 6pm feed he got a little cranky after his bottle and so we decided to hold off on trying--then he was asleep at 9pm--so we are going to just wait and try breastfeeding tomorrow. I'm really excited--I'm praying he'll latch on correctly--a few people (with CDH babies) have told me that although breastfeeding can be more work for babies--they seem to do better with it--so we'll see. Either way--we are so happy that his feeds are going well. But Dr. Kays cautions that we still don't know if he is refluxing--sometimes it can be silent--he'll do an upper GI study a little later and then we will have a better idea on what is going on.
Par had some special visitors today--his Great-grandfather, and his two great-aunts (Lissy & Virginia). Unfortunately, Par slept through their visits and has no idea they were even there (although Aunt Lissy tried to pry his eyes open with her fingers in an effort to wake him up). Anyway, my point is--there is still an even playing field when it comes to the coveted "favorite great aunt spot"--so aunts, continue to send flowers and gifts please. :)
We are so thankful for everyone's continued prayers. I know this blog is just a glimpse of what is going on here--but your notes, emails, comments always come at the perfect time and say just what we need to hear/read...so I guess the "glimpse" you are seeing is accurately depicting our emotional/spiritual needs--so thank you.
Love, Liz, Rusty & Birthday Boy Par!

Happy Birthday Precious Par!!! What a milestone day. I guess it feels wonderful to sit and swing some instead of having to lay. You are such a special boy. Rusty and Liz, you are such great parents. God bless you today. Love, Sheila
Yay for one month! We continue to pray for your strength (all 3 of you). We love seeing him do wonderful new things...a real NICU 2 swinging bachelor you have there!!! ha ha

Liz,
I am so glad to hear that you will get to try to nurse Par tomorrow. I pray that he takes to it very naturally. Ask if Elaine can come over to help you. She is the O.T. and lactation consultant. She is awesome, although you may already know that. It is wonderful to see Gods glory in all of this. We walk a hard path, but we are truly blessed to have a relationship with the King of Kings. Celebrating and rejoicing for you, Rusty and your precious Par. We are scheduled to come up on Dec 18th for Evans appointment. I would love to take you out to lunch. Maybe Tina and Josh can join us as well. That is if you are still there (Praying you won't be)
In Christ,
Tamara Tessmer
P.S. Tina and Josh have my #. Please call if you need ANYTHING!
Yay! Happy (belated) Birthday, Par!

Liz, Praying for continual progress!!! Do not get frustrated with breastfeeding. It took Morganne 1 week to decide to nurse and Jordan took 13 days (and Morganne was full term). God bless you guys today. Praying against silent reflux (btw I am sure you remember that is what Jordan had. Also silent aspiration) Anyway God has it in control. Still praying Allison
So exciting! Just a thought... Schedule an appointment with a lactation nurse to be present for your first feeding. Sometimes it is tough to figure it out when you have a baby that is full term and no CDH. Good luck! Nursing is the BEST!
hey liz, hope all goes well with nursing,it is the best, but there is nothing wrong with bottle feeding either.May i ask how old you are, you look so young, nothing wrong with that but you and rusty look so young
Happy Birthday Par! Good luck with breastfeeding. It took my baby a while to get the hang of it, but once she did she LOVES nursing and so do I.

You have a beautiful special baby boy there!we to have a special baby boy 'Kaden' born on 25th july 07 with CDH - like you our boy has been through so much and had his repair done at 1 day old,and apart from being tube fed and slow to gain weight you wouldnt know the difference between him and any other baby.Looking at your baby reminds me of our boy and our testing times not so long ago and all the ups and downs-stay positive
Our thoughts are with you
